Q: After the spinach outbreak, there was some speculation that the bacteria might have been internalized during the actual growing process. Entry through cuts and bruises certainly makes a lot more sense than bacteria somehow going from the soil into the growing plant, but was there any testing done on the concept?
A: On root uptake, research exists (some of it in growth chambers or greenhouses rather than in the field under commercial production conditions) that shows that root update is possible under some conditions for some crops. However, its well documented that pathogens, if present, CAN attach to the surface of leafy greens and enter through wounds and cut surfaces.
Q: Regarding the safety of organically grown produce versus conventionally grown produce. Any difference?
A: We have no data indicating organic is any more or less safety than conventionally grown produce. For either system, best practices for the individual operation should be used.
