Elizabeth Andress, Ph.D.
Professor of Foods and Nutrition Extension Food Safety Specialist
Dr. Andress has been a food safety specialist with the Georgia Cooperative Extension Service since 1994 where she develops, implements and evaluates Extension programs in food safety and quality, which include home food preservation.
Dr. Andress provides statewide leadership for ServSafe® foodhandler trainings delivered through the Extension Service in Georgia, provides foodservice assistance and guidance for personal care home providers, and shares leadership for Extension food preservation and consumer food safety education programs in the state.
She also teaches FDNS 4640/6640, Food
Sanitation and Safety, in the Department of Foods and Nutrition.
Currently she is serving as Project Director for a USDA-funded
National Center for Home Food Processing and Preservation, a
multi-institutional research, education and extension endeavor.
Other background:
Dr. Andress served as National Program Leader for Food Science at the Extension Service, USDA, from 1991-1994. In this role, she also chaired the national Extension Food Safety and Quality Initiative, which provided special projects funding for food safety education throughout the land-grant university system. Prior to that, Dr. Andress was an Extension specialist at the University of Georgia and University of Florida. She was an Extension research associate in home food preservation at Penn State University for five years and co-authored the USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning. She began her career as an Extension home economist in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, in 1978.
