National Food Safety Database
About the National Food Safety Database
The goal of the National Food Safety Database project is to develop an efficient management system of US food safety databases that are used by the Cooperative Extension Service (CES), consumers, industry, and other public health organizations. The end result of such a management program is a highly informative, efficient and accurate website which will provide one-stop shopping for food safety information.
Currently in the United States there is an acute awareness about the safety of food supplies among all sectors of the population. Although the risk of foodborne illness is low in comparison to many other countries, most consumers have developed uncertainties (through media reports and other sources) about the safety of food.
Consumer concerns have had many consequences on the food production system, including an increased demand for CES and their food safety specialists to rapidly locate and deliver accurate information to their clientele. To address this demand, numerous food safety resources have been developed for various audiences, ranging from producer to consumer. In addition to printed resources, a growing amount of information now is accessible in electronic format, and increasingly on the Internet. The Internet is fast becoming an important tool for food safety specialists, allowing for rapid location of specific information via gigabytes of data.
